Publication

The database can be considered as the third, updated and digitized, edition of the major reference publication on Ealry Netherlandish Painting, written by Max J. Friedländer, of which

  • a first edition, in German, was published in Berlin-Leyden, 1924-1937
  • a second, updated edition, in English, was published in Leyden, 1967-1976.

The Friedländer 3.0 database includes all the records from the second, English edition, published in 1967-1976 in close collaboration, among others, with the Centre for the Study of the Flemish Primitives. You can download the different volumes here. The database is organised according to the concept of 'group'. This means that the list of paintings classified under a certain artist includes works by his own hand as well as works of anonymous assistants, pupils and contemporary followers and copies. The Friedländer 3.0 database is initiated by our committee member Jean-Luc Pypaert and partially overlaps the files assembled since the early fifties by the scientific staff of the Study Centre. The database is being completed and updated regularly.
